Understanding Coatings and Sealants
Modern vehicle protection has moved far beyond traditional carnauba waxes. Synthetic sealants and ceramic coatings provide a harder, more chemically resistant layer over your vehicle's clear coat. However, it is vital to have realistic expectations regarding their performance.
What a Ceramic Coating Does
Ceramic coatings bond to the paintwork to create a hydrophobic (water-repelling) surface. This makes the vehicle much easier to clean, as dirt and grime have a harder time sticking to the panels. It can help protect against minor chemical etching from bird droppings or tree sap if cleaned relatively quickly.
What It Doesn't Do
We do not claim that any coating is "permanent" or "scratch-proof". A ceramic coating will not stop stone chips, it will not prevent scratches from poor washing techniques, and it is not a substitute for regular maintenance.
Preparation is Key
A coating is only as good as the surface it is applied to. Proper preparation—involving a thorough wash, chemical decontamination, and usually machine polishing—is required before application. Sealing over contaminated paint will result in poor bonding and reduced longevity.
Durability Expectations
The durability of any sealant or coating depends heavily on several factors:
- The specific product applied
- Your annual mileage
- Whether the vehicle is garaged or parked outdoors
- Exposure to winter road salt and harsh weather
- Your ongoing washing routine (using harsh automated washes will rapidly degrade any coating)
